What Is ADAS and Why Does It Matter for Windshield Replacement?
ADAS stands for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems — the suite of safety technologies in modern vehicles that includes lane departure warning, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, and forward collision alert. In most vehicles made after 2018, the primary camera for these systems is mounted directly on the windshield, pointed forward through the glass.
When that windshield is replaced, the camera must be recalibrated. Even a millimeter of positional difference from the original glass can throw off the camera's field of view enough to make safety systems unreliable — or dangerous.
Which Vehicles Require ADAS Calibration?
If your car has any of the following features, it almost certainly requires calibration after windshield replacement:
- Lane departure warning or lane keep assist
- Automatic emergency braking (AEB)
- Forward collision warning
- Adaptive cruise control
- Traffic sign recognition
- Tesla Autopilot or Full Self-Driving hardware
- Subaru EyeSight
- Toyota Safety Sense
- Honda Sensing
- Volvo City Safety
As a general rule: if your car was made after 2016 and cost over $25,000, assume it needs calibration. When in doubt, our technicians check your VIN before every replacement.
Static vs Dynamic Calibration — What's the Difference?
Static Calibration
The vehicle is parked in a controlled environment and a calibration target (a special board or pattern) is positioned precisely in front of the car. The camera is aligned to this target using manufacturer software. Takes 45–90 minutes. Required for most vehicles.
Dynamic Calibration
The technician drives the vehicle at specific speeds on roads with clear lane markings while the camera self-calibrates using real-world data. Takes 20–40 minutes of driving. Some manufacturers (like Ford and GM) require this in addition to static calibration.
Combined Calibration
Some vehicles — particularly Teslas and newer luxury models — require both static and dynamic steps. We perform both at your location whenever possible, or coordinate the drive route nearby.
What Happens If You Skip Calibration?
Skipping ADAS calibration after windshield replacement is one of the most dangerous mistakes a driver can make. Here's why:
- Lane departure may activate incorrectly — the system thinks you're drifting when you're centered, causing sudden steering corrections.
- Automatic braking fires at the wrong time — or worse, fails to fire when needed.
- Adaptive cruise control loses accuracy — following distance calculations are off.
- You won't know anything is wrong — no warning lights, no error codes. The system appears functional but is miscalibrated by millimeters that matter at highway speed.
A 2023 AAA study found that uncalibrated ADAS systems after windshield replacement caused lane-departure activation errors in 100% of test cases.
Does Insurance Cover ADAS Calibration?
Yes — in most cases. If your comprehensive insurance covers windshield replacement, ADAS calibration is typically covered as part of the same claim because it's required to restore the vehicle to its pre-loss condition. We document and bill calibration alongside the glass on your claim so there's no additional cost to you.
ADAS Calibration Cost Without Insurance
If paying out of pocket, calibration costs in the East Bay typically run:
- Static calibration: $150 – $250
- Dynamic calibration: $100 – $180
- Combined (both): $250 – $400
Dealer pricing is typically 30–50% higher. Auto Renu performs calibration on-site at your location using OEM-grade equipment.
Auto Renu's ADAS Process
- VIN check before ordering glass — we confirm exactly which features your vehicle has before the appointment.
- OEM or OEM-equivalent glass — using the correct glass specification is step one of correct calibration.
- On-site calibration — we bring the target equipment to your driveway or parking lot.
- Verification scan — after calibration, we scan the system to confirm no fault codes.
- Test drive — our technician performs a short test to confirm lane-keep and collision systems are responding correctly.
