California Window Tint Law — Quick Summary (2025)
California's window tint regulations are governed by Vehicle Code Section 26708. Before you book a tint job, here's exactly what's legal:
| Window | Legal VLT | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Windshield | Top 4 inches only | Non-reflective visor strip only — no full tint |
| Front Side Windows | 70% VLT minimum | Must allow at least 70% of light through |
| Rear Side Windows | Any darkness | As long as vehicle has both side mirrors |
| Rear Windshield | Any darkness | Must have rear-view mirrors on both sides |
VLT = Visible Light Transmission. A higher percentage means lighter tint (lets more light in). A lower percentage means darker tint.
What Does 70% VLT Look Like?
70% VLT is very light — almost invisible. Factory glass is typically 70–80% VLT, so adding a 70% tint film to your front windows gives very light heat and UV protection without noticeably darkening the glass. Many drivers choose this for the front windows specifically to stay legal while getting UV protection.
Can I Tint My Rear Windows Darker?
Yes — California allows any tint darkness on rear side windows and the rear windshield, as long as your vehicle has an outside mirror on both the driver and passenger sides. This means you can go 5% limo tint on the back of your SUV or sedan with no legal issue.
Reflective Tint Rules
California also restricts reflective or metallic tint films:
- Front side windows: cannot be more reflective than a standard window
- Rear side windows: same rule applies
- Mirrored or chrome-effect films are illegal on all windows
Medical Exemptions
California allows darker front window tint if you have a medical condition requiring it (e.g., lupus, porphyria, photosensitivity). You need a signed certification from a licensed physician and must carry it in the vehicle. The exemption must be renewed annually.
What Are the Fines for Illegal Tint?
Illegal window tint in California is a fix-it ticket (correctable violation):
- First offense: $25 base fine (plus court fees, total ~$100–$200)
- Fix it ticket: Remove the illegal tint, get it signed off by law enforcement, pay a dismissal fee
- Repeat offenses: Fine increases and may become a non-correctable infraction
More importantly, officers can pull you over solely for illegal tint — which creates potential for additional citations.
