California Window Tint Laws 2026 — Complete Guide

California has some of the strictest window tint laws in the US. Get it wrong and you'll receive a fix-it ticket and be required to remove the tint. Get it right and you'll enjoy heat rejection, UV protection, and privacy without legal risk.

Legal Tint Limits by Window

Front windshield: Tint strip allowed only on top 4 inches (above the AS-1 line). Must be non-reflective. Front side windows (driver + passenger): Must allow more than 70% of light in (70% VLT minimum). Rear side windows: Any darkness allowed. Rear window: Any darkness allowed if vehicle has dual side mirrors.

Reflectivity Rules

California prohibits metallic or mirrored tint on any window. Tint cannot be more than 35% reflective on front windows and 35% on rear windows. Reflective tint that looks like a mirror from outside is always illegal.

Medical Exemptions

California allows darker front window tint with a signed medical exemption from a licensed physician. Conditions that qualify include lupus, photosensitivity, porphyria, and melanoma. The exemption certificate must be kept in the vehicle.

What Happens If You Get a Ticket

A window tint violation in California is a fix-it ticket (correctable violation). Fine: $25 base + fees (typically $197 total). You must remove the illegal tint, have the vehicle inspected, and pay a dismissal fee. Auto Renu installs only California-legal tint — 70%+ VLT on front windows.

Why 70% VLT Still Makes a Difference

At 70% VLT, you still get meaningful heat rejection (15–20% reduction), UV protection (up to 99% UV block with ceramic film), and glare reduction. Carbon and ceramic films at 70% VLT are nearly invisible but dramatically more comfortable than untinted glass.
